The South African political leader and winner of the Nobel Peace Prize Nelson Mandela revered South African state and spent 27 years in prison for treason before becoming the first black president of the country torn by apartheid in 1994, died Thursday as a result of health problems.

Madela's death was announced by South African President Jacob Zuma on television during the president's speech. Mandela had not been seen in public since World Cup 2010, that his country hosted.
